Adolescent Mental Health

Adolescent mental health problems are more common than most people want to admit. As parents, we need to think that our children are normal, if not perfect. Although this is usually far from the fact even in the healthiest families, learning that you have a child with a harsh mental illness can be completely devastating for parents. Basically, adolescent mental health disorders come in two flavors. There are the disorders that are generally the product of adolescents – anxiety, depression, and that sort of thing – and those which become active during adolescence and then don’t go away.

When my Johnny started having adolescent mental health concerns, I would not even admit it to myself. I figured that he was just going through a period. Nonetheless, when he started engaging in self-destructive behaviors, losing contact with the family and getting poorer and worse grades, I knew that something had to be done. I finally faced my worst fear. My son was not normal. He was a good child, but he needed professional psychiatric care. If my son had schizophrenia or some other chronic disease, the prognosis would have been quite a bit bleaker. As an adolescent with chronic anxiety and depression concerns, however, he wasn’t destined to face lifelong troubles in the same way.

Of course, finding a good doctor for him was extremely difficult. In many communities, there is a severe shortage of decent adolescent mental health care. You need the best psychiatrist for your adolescent – someone who can be a mentor and role model as well as an excellent doctor. Acute care was alright – there was a hospital that would take him in almost immediately – but finding the sort of long-term care that I really felt he needed was more difficult. Adolescent mental health problems often do improve within a few weeks to a few years, but that still leaves the problem of finding treatment in the meantime. It has to be a decision you take together too. You have to to poise your observations and the conclusion of your teenager to find somebody who they can actually work with.

It turns out that I was right. The psychiatrist that I found was an specialist in treating adolescent mental health disorders. He treated teenagers with bipolar disorder, acute anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, and lots of other health problems. He actually worked on a referral basis with the acute treatment clinic that my son went to, so I got his name after the first physician didn’t work out. I could tell that my kid liked him a lot, and I held him in the highest esteem. It seemed like the first good break that we had gotten since this whole trial began, and I was hopeful that more constructive developments would follow.

Dr. Stephanie White, the Chief Administrator of Uptown Clinic, a community mental health agency, is concerned about the dilemma of coping with reduced budgets next year and into the foreseeable future, but increasing demand for services. In order to plan for reduced budgets, she must first identify where costs can be cut or reduced and still keep the agency functioning. Below are some data from the past year.

Program Area Costs
Administration
Salaries:
Administrator
$60,000
Assistant
$35,000
Two Secretaries
$42,000
Supplies $35,000
Advertising and promotion $9,000
Professional meetings/dues $14,000
Purchased Services:
Accounting and billing
$15,000
Custodial
$13,000
Security
$12,000
Consulting
$10,000
Community Mental Health Services
Salaries (two social workers) $46,000
Transportation $10,000
Outpatient mental health treatment
Salaries:
Psychiatrist
$86,000
Two Social Workers
$70,000

Give a dollar range of costs to reduce budgets (worst and best case analysis).

You need to cut $94,000 in cost. Prioritize those cuts that can be made without impacting the operation or quality care of the organization.

How would you advise Dr. White to prepare for reduced budgets?

I am doing some research for a paper. So, please respond with this in mind. The facts indicate that many homeless people are afflicted with a mental health issue. Let’s call them MILPs for short (Mentally Ill Homeless Persons).
My proposal is to ask for voluntary registration from MILPs who visit homeless shelters nationwide and ask they would be willing to register under this program over a five year period. The idea is that many MILPs are transients by nature, and that they may be hurting themselves by not getting access to many of our Country’s social services timely because they have to open and close welfare cases, or contact Social Security with constant address changes to get uniterrupted assistance. By registering for this program, they might be able to get the much need support they require in order to stay off the streets longer and receive treatment appropriate to their condition without becoming a burden on local populations for emergency-type services. Thoughts?

Personality Disorder is a Disease that people are born with or start suffering early in life. But thousands of Troops upon leaving Iraq and the Service are denied Medical Treatment because they are diagnosed with Personality Disorders which are not considered caused by combat trauma. The unfairness is that all Troops are given complete medical examiations when they join the Military. To be accepted in the military means Troop is healthy, period. Being accepted in the Military means that anything that medically happens to a Troop during his or her time in the service is something new, something that did not exist before they joined the Military.
But the Military is denying benefits to Combat Veterans because they had Personality Disorders before they joined the Military. This is not logical, provable, appropriate or even legal in terms of the conditions of services. But, the United States Military is doing this to returning Combat Veterans who after combat have mental health problems.

The government in New Zealand give the Maori special treatments like benefits, health services, special entry for only pacific and maori students, and the list continues on, from the psych lecture today, maori are “traumatised” by the adapting to a different culture,’Acculturation’-which gives them acculturation stress-that results in negative mental stress.I just cant help but only see it as excuses for their bad behaviour. They cry out for injustice, prejudice and racism, but still ask for special treatment!Special treatment will only isolate them from everyone else who’s also trying very hard to make a living!Cant anyone see the cycle will never break unless the NZ govt treat everyone equally!Hostility towards them will never end, the elder Maori will only teach their children nothing but give reasons to make excuses,no wonder the Maori are decreasing in numbers, we shouldnt treat them so well so that they can learn to stand up themselves so they can be good role models for their nxt gen
Im not putting all Maori in one group, I have Maori friends too, who, like their family, have stable jobs and income, but i also know many others who have incredible numbers of siblings in their family with no stable income, who likes to do nothing but live on their govt income. My point is, do you agree with the system we have now, with exceptions to only certain ethnicities, also knowing while, that there are many others who are unfortunate too, but dont get anything because they’re not counted as Maori. U say its only a small majority, but the whole takes advantage of this, you cannot say its not their fault when you know they also get the same benefits, Are the govt doing the right thing? Why havent they realised you have to help the adults to become good role models to their children by using the money instead, for teaching Maori adults how to be responsible and how to earn money the right way, than helping the aftermath of the situation, cut the problem by initialising the roots!
